Interior Finishing Checklist: Edges, Joints and Handover

Modern interior design is all about creating a sleek, functional, and aesthetically pleasing space that reflects contemporary living. Whether you’re updating a single room or redesigning your entire home, incorporating modern interior design principles can bring a fresh.

The final impression of a room often comes from ordinary details: a clean junction, a door that opens properly and a surface that can be maintained. Agree on those details before installation, then use a written checklist at handover.

Approve representative details early

Ask how skirting meets a door frame, how cabinet edges are finished and where different materials meet. Review a sample or an actual completed section before the same detail is repeated. Keep the approved reference available to the people doing the work.

Inspect in the lighting used daily

Check painted surfaces and visible joints under ordinary daylight and evening lighting. Record concerns with photographs and their exact location. Surface expectations should relate to the agreed finish, preparation and condition of the existing substrate.

Operate everything

Open doors and drawers, test handles and inspect clearance around adjacent furniture. Check whether shelves and removable panels can be accessed. Let the relevant qualified trades test electrical and plumbing work; a visual inspection alone does not establish that those systems are safe.

Close with a snag list

Group outstanding items by room and agree who will address each item. Keep product codes, care instructions and any documented warranty terms supplied for the actual work. Do not assume a general website statement applies to every product or service.

Before you begin

  • Approve junction and edge samples.
  • Photograph issues by room and location.
  • Check movement and maintenance access.
  • Keep specifications and the agreed snag list.
