A bold accent works best when it has a clear place in the room. Before choosing a dark paint, strong pattern or textured feature, decide what the wall should draw attention to and how it will look from the main entrance and seating position.
Choose the wall for a reason
Consider the room's proportions, doors, windows and permanent furniture. A wall behind a sofa or bed may provide a useful backdrop, while a wall interrupted by many openings can fragment the feature. Test the idea on the plan before choosing a finish.
Keep surrounding decisions coordinated
Compare the accent with flooring, curtains and large furniture. A restrained surrounding palette can give a stronger feature room to work. Repeating a small amount of the accent elsewhere is an option, but it is not necessary to match every accessory.
Approve a physical sample
View a sample in daylight and under the actual evening lamps. Check texture from normal viewing distance and ask about preparation and cleaning. A finish that looks appealing in a close-up photograph may read very differently across a whole wall.
Plan edges and future changes
Agree where the finish begins and ends, including corners, sockets and adjacent surfaces. Keep the shade code and product reference. If you expect to change the room later, discuss how that finish can be repainted or replaced before installation.
Before you begin
- Check the wall from the entrance and main seat.
- View the sample alongside retained finishes.
- Agree preparation, edges and cleanup.
- Keep the final shade and product references.
