Material selection is easier when you compare how a surface will be used. A wardrobe door, kitchen work area and living-room wall do different jobs. There is no single best finish for every location, so record the conditions before comparing products.
Match the finish to the location
Identify contact with water, sunlight, heat, cleaning products and regular abrasion. Ask the supplier for the exact product specification and its permitted uses. Terms such as premium or water-resistant are not enough to establish suitability for a particular installation.
Inspect a complete sample
View the face, edge, joint and handle together. An attractive surface can look different when an exposed edge or profile is added. Compare samples beside the floor and adjacent finishes. Check both daylight and evening lighting before approving the final combination.
Ask about cleaning and repair
Request the manufacturer's cleaning instructions and find out whether a damaged component can be repaired or replaced. Ask how the finish behaves at joints and around hardware. Keep product names, shade codes and supplier details so later maintenance does not depend on memory.
Specify the installation as well as the surface
A quotation should identify the substrate, finish, edge treatment, hardware and relevant preparation. Ask who checks measurements before fabrication and how changes are approved. Two quotations for the same visible finish may include different materials underneath.
Before you begin
- Record location and expected wear.
